The Case for Social Change

In the article "The Case For More Guns" by Jeffrey Goldberg and the essay "The Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift both present examples of the need for social change. Rhetorical strategies permeate the pieces and even though the articles are written in different time periods and on different subjects, their goal is the same, to achieve social change. Swift implements irony, logos and ethos to help him persuade his audience to his side which is to show the world that the British landlords are cruel and ruining the lives of the Irish. Goldberg relies upon pathos along with logos and juxtaposition to convince America to add more weapons to the public through concealed weapon permits.

When Jonathan Swift wrote "A Modest Proposal" Ireland was ruled by the British who were causing mass poverty and starvation across the nation. It was so horrible that some Irish people resorted to cannibalism. This piece was originally published as anonymous so nobody knew Swift wrote it, causing people to believe it as an actual proposal instead of knowing it was satire. By Swift saying,". that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard child." he appeals to the logos sense because it would appear only logical to eat a one year old instead of letting it go to waste when the mothers kill their own child. When people are in dire poverty and are starving they will resort to eating people especially if the idea is presented in a purely logical reason. Swift uses irony to show how bad life is in Ireland and to take a shot at the British landlords. ".the poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own which by law may be made liable to distress and help pay for their landlord's rent." This quote is a perfect example of the irony Swift uses. A child should already be your own and it should not have to be used as a way to pay rent. Even though he does not say it the message that the control of the British landlords has caused great distress in the country and they need to have their rule terminated so the citizens can go back to their jobs.
