Christmas Traditions
Christmas signifies the birth of Christ according to the Bible. Christians first started the Christmas celebration; this was a day dedicated to celebrating the birth of their Savior. The story said that the virgin Mary conceived the Son of God. Mary and her husband Joseph in fear of the child's life fled to Bethlehem. Jesus was said to be born in a stable underneath the brightest star in the sky. Many stories where told of how three wise men and shepherds followed the bright star to witness to birth of In 1772 Baptist churches did not celebrate the birth of Christ. On December 25, 1772 the Baptist Church of Newport observed Christmas for the first time. A minister had begun holding lectures on Wednesday one year before hand. Because Christmas happened to fall on a Friday in 1772, the minister made some adjustments to speak Friday. He delayed his service until that Friday. This was the first time Christmas was celebrated in the Baptist Church. It was also the first time that the Christmas celebration made its appearance in the Baptist Church of New England. Close your eyes and try to imagine this: the Midland Mall, the last days before Christmas last year. Does it look like people a
There are also people who consciously celebrate Christmas non-religiously. These people celebrate Christmas almost like others, with presents, a lot of good food, Christmas tree, and family parties. The only thing that is different is that nothing of their celebration shows the religious side - no angels on the tree, no Christmas manger and no star on the top of the tree. These people celebrate the celebration of mid-winter, also called the celebration of the sun. re calm, happy, waiting for the festival when we celebrate the birth of Jesus? Can you see any signs of this reason why we celebrate Christmas in the shops in the Midland Mall? After taking a really good look, maybe you'll discover a small stable in one corner of the mall. Inside, there are a few sheep, hay, a manger, some funny-looking people dressed up like Joseph, Mary and the three wise men. Here you can rest and think of why we celebrate Christmas. Finally a place which gives you the right associations to Christmas. But does the stable have many visitors? It looks like people no longer care about the reason for celebrating Christmas. The most important thing for them is to get through a holiday, to buy a lot of presents for family and friends, and eat a lot of good food. Where is Jesus among all of this? My opinion about Christmas celebration today is that it is no longer a religious celebration, at least not as much as before, but that it is a family celebration. Of course there are these lonely elderly people, and these children from separated and disfunctional families who don't experience Christmas as a family celebration, but I still feel that Christmas is generally a family celebration. The time before Christmas is a very busy time, especially because everyone wants to buy gifts for each other. This is a rather new idea when we look at history, to give each other presents at Christmas.
