The Colonization of the Americ
A detailed Summary of The Colonization of the Americ
The modern day united states is in existence today because of the colonization done by the five nations of france, englan, the Netherlands, spain, and Portugal. These five countries began expanding out of their respective mother countries as early as the late fifteenth century, and continued to claim land and set up colonies as late as the mid seventeenth century. These countries had different motives and methods of colonization as well as different relationships with the Amerindians.
The earliest colonization of the Americas was in 1492 when the Spanish first landed in the west indies. Soon after that they began exploring and colonizing the main land present day United States. The Spanish had three motives for wanting to colonize that Americas: gold, God, and glory. They also had rather effectives ways of doing this. In the 16th century, roughly one hundred thousand Spanish immigrants, most of whom were former soldiers, began coming over to the Americas.
These immigrants had several ways of colonizing the Americas. Immigrants either set up large estates, importing sheep, cattle, and other live stock; or set up large suga

The English had quite different motives for colonization then the Spanish did. The English wanted to colonize for political, economic, social, and religious reasons, as well as finding a northwest passage to the Pacific. The religious aspect of colonization was two fold. Some immigrants came to the Americas in search of a place where they would be able to worship freely, while others came to the Americas in order to convert the Amerindians to Catholicism.
The French began their colonization efforts in 1524. The French shared the desire to find a northwest passage to the Pacific with the English, but the French also had fishing and fur trading motives. The French were also very unobtrusive about their colonization methods. They simply set up scattered missions throughout their encompassing territories.
The Dutch motives for colonization was the Patroon method. What this was that large plots of land were sold to immigrants by the Dutch West India company. The immigrants had to set up families on these plots of land and live there. While fur trade was the main form of business of these Patroons, the mother country also encouraged agriculture.
