The manager today faces a lot of ethical issues as the weight of losses from sexual harassment action, workplace violence, accidents, employee theft, and workers" compensation. Fraud amounts to billions of dollars each year in lost revenue, inventory, and personnel. These serious problems can drain profits, drive away productive employees, and expose ones company to serious legal trouble and costly civil suits. Of course all this was created from the changes that have happened in this century. For example, human rights, freedom of expression, equality of opportunity, positive discrimination, organisational structure, communication and technology, globalisation, cultures within companies, etc. As soon as a manager hires his first employee, he/she'll need to comply with several laws governing employers' relationships with their workers. Fairness and non-discrimination are essential. As an employer, one is held accountable to a host of state and federal laws that regulate the relationship a manager has with his/her employees. Among the things a manager will be expected to know and understand are, wage and hour laws including retirement plans, healthcare benefits, workplace safety rules and regulations. How to avoid sexual harassment as well as discrimination based on gender, age, race, pregnancy, sexual orientation and national origin, and how to fire an employee without trampling on his or her legal rights. .
The first issue I would like to discuss is that of sexual harassment. Sexual harassment on the job took a dramatic leap into public awareness in October 1991, when Professor Anita Hill made known her charges against Judge Clarence Thomas after his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Many other incidents have erupted since then, Paula Jones dominated headlines for months with her claim that President Clinton harassed her while he was a governor. And more recently, Mitsubishi Motors agreed to pay a record $34 million settlement to hundreds of women harassed at its auto assembly plant.
