White House: Home of the President for Over 200 Years

             For over 200 hundred years the White House has been the home of the president, and has overcome many historic moments in United States History. The White House is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday and closed every Sunday and Monday. There are two different tours, walk-tour and a self-guided tour on Saturday from 10 A.M. until noon. With the walk-tour there is a guide that will explain each room land its history in detail. In the self guided tours there are U.S. Secret Service tour officers stationed in each room to answer any questions that are brought about.

             George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 to order to declare a place for the government to reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square.on the river Potomac." The" Presidents House" was made by an Irish architect, James Hoban and won a gold medal for his designing of the White House. George Washington never lived in the White house, its first residents where President John Adams and his wife. Since that time each President has made there own changes and additions to the house. The White House has undergone two fires, on from the British in 1814 and the second in the West Wing in1929. President Jefferson opened the house for tour and has remained open except when the nation was at war.
