Modern Women in the Work Force

Even though women have made rapid gains in the working world, they still are victims of discrimination. A woman's level of education, field of education, and time spent in the work force, all play a role in determining how much she gets paid. In eariler years, women stayed home to care and provide for their families. Many women are changing their roles from homemaker to breadwinners, and are choosing to enter the work force. In spite of their efforts to penetrate the market, women still face many obstacles that hinder their growth. As women enter into the workforce, they don't receive the same rights and opportunity as men do, they assume you're saying they won't be able to succeed. Women are affected in the work force by statistical discrimination, occupational segregation, and wage discrimination.

"Statistical discrimination is judging individuals on the basis of the average characteristics of the group to which the person belong, rather than on their own personal characteristics or productivity." (Bruce,470).This type of discrimination can result even when there is no intentional prejudice. "Therefore employers are not satisfying some taste for discrimination but, rather, are using gender, race, or ethic background as a very grude indicator of productio related attributes of workers, which are not easily discernable"(Bruce, 470). Employers feel that they would make a better investment by hiring men. They feel that women are prone to take more time off from work due to family problems, and wouldn't be willing to relocate. This is an example of the " average characteristics for a group are being applied to individual members of that group. The employer is falsely assuming that each and every woman worker has the same employment tendencies as the average woman" (Bruce,471). The employer is making this assumption for all women. They don't know which women would actually be more committed to their job.
