Phone Fraud
Every since the Cellular industry come about, it has been a booming business. The industry average revenue is over 20 billion dollars a year. That is 20 billion dollars in America alone. As years pass, everyone knows that the Cellular phone industry is only getting bigger and better due to high demand, cheaper phones, and cheaper contracts. With an industry that is so large and making so much money, there is more chance for fraud. Hackers, with cellular phone security change constantly, are daily trying to find a new way to make a free call, or just trying to beat the system for personal challenge. Surprisingly enough, violators who are caught don't face a real stern penalty for ripping off companies for thousands of dollars. The chances of getting prosecuted for a single violation is unlikely, but if you repeat violator the penalty can be sever. So why not try to find a way to make a free call if the penalty isn't very harmful? As of 1999 there have been a little over 1000 people arrested and tried for cellular fraud, most with multiple counts. Experts say that over 800 thousand dollars each day are lost due to cellular fraud. Even more surprisingly though, each year 600 million dollars are lost; which i
Ironically, around the same time, Captain Crunch put a toy whistle in each box of cereal. Unknown to Captain Crunch, the toy whistle that they put in each box was going to change history. A radio technician, in the United States Air Force, became intrigued with the whistle when he found out that when he blew it into the telephone after dialing any long distance number, the trunk line would remain open without toll charges kept track of. From then on, any number could be dialed for free. The truth was that the whistle produced a perfect-pitch 2600 Hz tone, the one used to signify a disconnect in Electronic Switching System switching equipment. All in all, Phone security is getting pretty slack. Just how the "original" phone was hacked, cell phones with the booming industry will be continued to be hacked. Cellular fraud is a booming theft market, and the more people that jump on the cellular bandwagon, the more fraud we will see. Unless there is a decent encryption scheme in place for phone security, there isn't too much change that we will see in the future. The ETF's are electrical devices used to get free long-distance calls. The devices are more commonly known as colored boxes, and using them is known as "boxing." Boxing is one of the oldest ways to phreak, and therefore, it is also the most dangerous, since the telephone companies are very much aware of their existence. Colored boxes are not used only for phreaking. The colored boxes are also used to hack into your electric bill to lower your cost. Eventually, the demand for faster and more efficient long distance service caused Bell to make a multi-billion dollar decision. They had to create a signaling system that could be used on the LD Network. They had two options: To send all the signaling and supervisory information (eg., ON and OFF HOOK) over separate data links. This type of signaling is referred to as out-of-band signaling. To send all the signaling information along with the conversation using tones to represent digits. This type of signaling is called in-band signaling. The second seemed to be the most economical choice, and so, it was incorporated in Electronic Switching System. In the 1960's the first Electronic Switching Systems wer
