Entrance Essay for Distant Learning College Program

Over the past decade, increasing numbers of students of all ages and backgrounds have enrolled in distance learning college programs through the Internet. However, not all individuals find distributed learning best for their life style and the most effective learning approach. This type of education is most appropriate for students who feel comfortable interacting with technology, have specific reasons for studying from home rather than in a traditional college setting, and are self-motivated and personally directed. My skills and background fit these special distance learning criteria.

Using the Internet in this day and age is an essential way of life for many people--especially those attending college. Imagine how students used to do their research papers before! Although formal libraries still have considerable information of value, the Web makes learning much more time effective. During the week, I am on my computer day or night, either researching information, communicating with people throughout the world, taking courses, or just being entertained with music. I feel fortunate having this educational tool available right in my house. In the past, I have thoroughly enjoyed several Internet classes. Recently, for example, I completed a course on Microsoft CGC 2100. I also have strong computer skills, and find it quite easy to repair or update my laptop when needed. .

Computers are not my only skill. Outside of the area of academics, I also enjoy playing the piano, cooking international specialties for friends and family members and even training my dog, (name) new tricks. .

Also, I always like learning something new. That's one of the reasons why I look forward to taking an online course in Liberal Studies at the University of Illinois, Springfield in the fall of 2006. This degree will give me the opportunity to expand my knowledge, for both professional and personal purposes. For example, I have long wanted to know more about the history of other cultures such as ancient Rome, as well as have academic discussions with people who share my same interests.
