Marriage and Family Therapists -- MFT are important mental health practitioners who have been educated and trained so that they can assist with relationship problems, and diagnose and treat the related mental disorders and emotional difficulties of individuals, couples, families and groups which are believed to be the cause of the relationship difficulties. They operate in many specialized areas. .
In general, marriage and family therapists would like early crisis intervention and brief, focused psychotherapy so that the problems can be solved or symptoms minimized in the shortest time possible. They are also generally able to treat persons where more intensive, long-term treatment is essential to treat or reduce mental or emotional situations. The type of perceived problems that marriage and family therapists can help are "emotional stress or anxiety, feelings of loneliness, isolation, depression, moodiness, family conflicts or tension, divorce and separation, problems dealing with varying lifestyles, fear, anger or guilt, grief or emotional pain, conflicts with co-workers, and dealing with chronic or life-threatening illness". In short apart from the physical difficulties, there are also psychological difficulties. The treatment carried out by marriage and family therapists to couples are in the context of their lives so as to adjust their varied lifestyles, cultural setup, and religious or political links. This necessitates that marriage and family therapists are experts in family dynamics. They have to introduce healthy and productive relations and introduce positive behaviors in families with the aim that each member can attain his or her complete potential. In general, the aim should be that persons who have been treated by marriage and family therapists get more productive at work, make visits to their medical doctors very less often, and have less requirements of stay at in-patient facilities.
