The Child Observation Assignment

I observed that while playing with the others it became obvious that she was far less skilled at things like jumping rope, running, climbing and other physical activities than her peers where and she quickly appeared to become saddened when she could not keep up. .

Once back inside the classroom however, Kalia's mood brightened as she began her worksheets. She would periodically stop to help others with theirs and she didn't make any mistakes in the three that she did for herself. .

The second observation was in a Sunday school setting. Kalia sat at the end of the table and concentrated on her worksheet while there appeared to be chaos all around her. When the teacher asked the class to perform an activity she would quietly line up ready to do it even if the other students were not listening. I did not see her take charge as she had done in the daycare classroom. She appeared to be unsure of how to handle such chaos and it appeared to make her nervous. She asked the Sunday School teacher several times if it was almost time for class to end and for her mommy to come and get her. On the playground during snack period several of the children began to tease Kalia. They told her she was a baby and they asked her why she was in the four year old class when she was a baby. Kalia responded that she was not a baby and that they should mind their own business and not try and be mean. She also told them that Sunday school was probably not a good place to show their unkind ways. .

When they ran off to play without her she looked very sad but quickly sought out her teacher and asked if she could go inside. .

The third observation occurred at a birthday party. Kalia had been invited to go to a birthday party of a neighbor child who was turning five. .

During the party Kalia played easily with the other children in the living room. When a conflict would erupt it was Kalia who would act as mentor and ask both parties what they were upset about and then suggest solutions.
