Even during the time the country was founded, our forefathers recognized the need to have a clear leader of military forces. This ensures that swift action can be taken in time of need.
After the 9/11 attacks, the American people could see President George W. Bush taking action in his post as Commander-in-Chief. "As the Commander-in-Chief, he has mobilized the military to a state of readiness, and has made clear that he will command the military in a measured and appropriate manner" (Ricci, p. 1). President Bush made the decision to deploy troops both in Iraq and Afghanistan in an effort to ensure this country's national security. .

The president is the most visible representative of the United States when concerning foreign governments. He has the power to set foreign policy as well as the unofficial duty to smooze with important officials from other countries to build up the goodwill of the United States. He also has the power to give legitimacy to foreign governments. "The chief executive may refuse to recognize a newly formed foreign government" (Roles of the President). Additionally, in his Chief Diplomat/Foreign Policy Director role, the president has the power to propose legislation dealing with foreign aid, and he "may also may executive agreements with foreign leaders" (Roles of the President). We have seen President Bush meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair as well as many other important dignitaries in an attempt to drum up support for the United States and its world policies.
