The constitution is best described as a bundle of compromises. This statement is very true because everyone at the constitutional Convention had to compromise because there was no way everyone could get what they wanted. The delegates" ability to compromise is what makes the constitution work even in the present day. Each colony had to give something up in order to get what they wanted, and what they ended up with was a common ground, the constitution.
The first and probably one of the most talked about compromises was the subject of representation. One of the first proposed resolutions was the "Virginia Plan" introduced by James Madison. This plan proposed that there be two houses of Congress each one having representatives based on the population. This plan did not sit too well with the smaller states so they came up with their own plan, called the "New Jersey Plan". This plan stated that each state have the same number of representatives regardless of their population. Finally a compromise was reached, the "Connecticut Compromise". This plan stated that there would be two houses, with one having representation based on population (House Of Representatives), and the other having the same number of representatives regardless of the population (Senate).
The next issue they had to be compromised on was slavery. Such compromises were, "three-fifths compromise". The south wanted slaves to be counted part of the population, this way they could have more representatives in the House of Representatives. Immigrants were not coming into the south states and they couldn"t increase their land size, therefore their population size couldn"t grow. The north argued that since slaves were thought of as property that they should not count as the population. However if they were counted as population then they should be taxed like the rest of the population. The compromise stated that each slave would count as three-fifth of a person.
