While listening to the new album, both men drank a few beers and smoked a mild amount of marijuana; they all of a sudden reached a new low. They had been listening to the song "Beyond the Realms of Death", Jay then claims that, "All of a sudden we got a suicide message, and we got tired of life" that was when they made their suicide pact (Quoted in Billard). Then only a few minutes later both of them jumped out the window of the house with a sawed-off shotgun, and ran towards the deserted church playground behind Ray"s home. This is when Ray sat down on the merry-go-round and stated to Jay, "I sure *censored*ed my life up" and put the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger. Jay went to pick up the shotgun to follow his best friend"s actions but when he went to pull the trigger his hand!.
slipped from the blood on the gun and the bullet missed his brain. Jay had survived this unspeakable pact that him and his best friend had planned (Billard). .
This is a prime example how music lyrics of such artist can cause one to feel the pressure of suicide. Though Jay had survived his suicide attempt, he died only three years later of an overdose of the drugs prescribed to him due to his injuries from the attempt. Months after his best friends suicide, Jay "found comfort in believing that it was Judas Priest"s evil, hypnotic music that compelled them to carry out their suicide pact" (Quoted in Billard). While still alive Jay wrote a letter to Ray"s mother trying to explain their actions "I believe that alcohol and heavy-metal music such as Judas Priest led us to be mesmerized." is what was found in Jay"s letter (Quoted in Billard). Though Judas Priest is being sued for his messages, his attorney"s fought the law of the artist"s first amendment, the freedom of speech. In which case the families attorney"s of Raymond and James turned the charges around to the use of subliminal messages, which are not protected by the Constit!.
